Homemade Fig Jam

Homemade Fig Jam

There’s something undeniably magical about the act of preserving fruit. It’s a tradition that transcends generations, passing down delicious flavors and cherished memories. Today, I am making homemade fig jam, using figs from a tree that has been a part of my family for generations. This recipe is a tribute to my poppa, who once tended to the very fig tree that now thrives in my care.

The Fig Tree Legacy

My fig tree is a source of pride and nostalgia, a living testament to the enduring bond between generations. When my father gave me a small piece of the beloved tree, I felt the weight of tradition and the joy of preserving it.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Before we get into the process, let’s gather the ingredients for this delectable homemade fig jam:

  1. Fresh Figs: You’ll need about 2 pounds of ripe figs, preferably from your grandfather’s tree or any fresh figs you can get your hands on.
  2. Granulated Sugar: Approximately 1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar to sweeten the jam.
  3. Lemon Juice: The juice of one lemon, adds a touch of brightness to the jam.
  4. Water: A quarter cup of water to help the jam reach the perfect consistency.

The Process

  1. Wash and Prepare the Figs:
    • Gently wash the figs under cold water, removing any dirt or debris.
    • Trim the stems and cut the figs into small pieces. Leave the skin on for added texture and flavor.
  2. Combine Ingredients:
    • In a large saucepan, combine the figs, sugar, lemon juice, and water.
    • Stir well to ensure the sugar dissolves.
  3. Cook the Jam:
    • Over medium-high heat, bring the mixture to a boil.
    • Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer. Stir occasionally.
  4. Monitor the Consistency:
    • Simmer the jam for about 45-60 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency.
    • To check the consistency, place a spoonful of the jam on a chilled plate. If it wrinkles when you push it with your finger, it’s ready.
  5. Preserve Your Memories:
    • Carefully ladle the hot fig jam into sterilized jars, leaving a little space at the top.
    • Seal the jars while they are still hot, creating a vacuum seal as they cool.

Appreciate What You’ve Made

As the aroma of simmering figs fills your kitchen, take a moment to appreciate the connection between the past and the present. This homemade fig jam recipe not only preserves the delicious flavor of ripe figs but also honors the legacy of the fig tree that has been a part of your family for generations.

Whether you enjoy your fig jam on warm toast in the morning or as a sweet accompaniment to cheese and crackers, remember the love, history, and tradition it embodies.

It Took Me 7 Years to Want Another Child

It Took Me 7 Years to Want Another Child

For seven years, the haunting specter of perinatal anxiety held me captive, weaving threads of fear and uncertainty into every corner of my thoughts. The memory of that overwhelming experience lingered like a shadow, casting doubt upon the possibility of embracing motherhood again. The haunting whispers of my past struggles clouded each tender hope I held close.

The journey began with the birth of my first child, a beautiful moment tainted by the unexpected grip of anxiety that engulfed me. The joy I should have felt was suffocated by worry, doubts, and an unexplainable fear that seized my heart—sleepless nights turned into days of restless exhaustion as my mind became a battleground of irrational thoughts. Every cry and hiccup sent waves of panic through me as the fear of the unknown intertwined with my identity as a mother.

In the years that followed, the aftermath of perinatal anxiety cast a long shadow over my life. Every innocent coo and playful laugh was tinged with apprehension. I saw anxiety lurking in every corner, waiting to pounce and drag me back into its clutches. A whirlwind of medical appointments, therapy sessions, and self-help books became my constant companions as I fought to regain control over my emotions.

Seven years later, as I stood at the precipice of considering another child, my heart was a maelstrom of emotions. The scars from my experience were vivid and real, each etching a story of struggle and survival. But amidst the apprehension, a tiny spark of courage ignited within me. It whispered that my past did not define me, that my strength was greater than the fears that had bound me for so long.

With trepidation and determination, I embarked on a path of healing and self-discovery. I unearthed the courage to confront my fears head-on, acknowledging them as part of my journey but refusing to let them dictate my future. Therapy sessions became spaces of vulnerability and growth, where I learned to reframe my thoughts and slowly untangle the knots that anxiety had woven.

Reconnecting with my husband and opening up about my fears brought us closer, reminding us that a shared desire united us for a family filled with love and joy. The decision to welcome another child was both terrifying and exhilarating. I recognized that the road ahead might be challenging, but I had the tools, knowledge, and unwavering
determination to break free from the chains that had held me captive for so long.
And then, the moment of truth arrived. Holding the positive pregnancy test in my hands, a surge of emotions washed over me. And this time, I was different. I was armed with the lessons of the past, the strength I had gained from my battles, and the unwavering belief that I could embrace motherhood with open arms.

Embracing the decision to have another child doesn’t mean that anxiety will vanish entirely from my life. Instead, it signifies that I am equipped with tools, a support network, and a newfound strength to face any challenges that may arise. Given my history, I am well aware that perinatal anxiety might reappear. But this time around, I am not defenseless.
My journey through perinatal anxiety and the subsequent decision to welcome another child taught me that bravery isn’t the absence of fear but the courage to act despite it.
As I embark on this new chapter, I carry the lessons learned from my past. They serve as reminders of my strength and the progress I’ve made. I am no longer imprisoned by the fear that once held me back. Instead, I face the future with anticipation and the knowledge that I am not alone in this journey.

So, to those who have let their experiences and fears hold them back, I offer this testament of hope: You are not defined by your past struggles, and your strength is greater than the fears that have bound you. With time, healing, and unwavering determination, you, too, can rise above the shadows and embrace the possibility of a brighter future.

Back to the 80’s by S.E. Reichert

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Back to the 80s is a delightful rom-com that transported me to an era I love. If you’ve lived through the 80s, this book will resonate with you and evoke a sense of nostalgia for the fashion, music, toys, and everything that defined that era. The story revolves around an enemies-to-lovers romance, but what sets it apart is its refreshing and laid-back approach compared to typical books of this genre. The chemistry between the main characters is palpable, and I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing their relationship evolve throughout the book.

Right from the start, I was captivated by the plot and loved Blaine and the other shop owners. The characters were well-crafted, relatable, and oozed creativity, immersing me deeply in their journey. Blaine’s ownership of the quirky “Back to the 80s” novelty shop, passed down from her late mother, adds an endearing touch to the story. Meanwhile, Eric, a developer connected to his family’s construction company, threatens her shop’s existence as he plans to develop the mall where Blaine’s store stands.

The author beautifully blends humor into the narrative, with some lines genuinely making me laugh. In contrast, others brought on a cheesy smile and eye roll—just the perfect ingredients for a rom-com experience. This book was an entertaining summer read, and I recommend it to fellow rom-com enthusiasts who enjoy 80s nostalgia.

Pineapple No-Churn Ice Cream

Pineapple No-Churn Ice Cream

The HomeGoods Candle Challenge: Creating a Scentsational Pineapple No-Churn Ice Cream.

Have you ever walked into a HomeGoods store and been captivated by the delightful scents of their candles? I recently embarked on a fun and creative challenge that combined my love for candles and desserts. In this blog post, I’ll share my experience of finding my favorite candle at HomeGoods, using its scent as inspiration to create a mouthwatering dessert- Pineapple No-Churn Ice Cream, and repurposing the candle jar as a stylish container for the final treat. Join me as I take you through this scentsational journey!

Finding the Perfect Candle:

HomeGoods is a treasure trove of amazing candles with a wide variety of scents. As I wandered through the store, my senses were tantalized by the aromatic symphony of fragrances. After careful consideration, I finally discovered the candle that spoke to me. Its enticing aroma of Pineapple transported me to a tropical paradise.

Creating the Pineapple No-Churn Ice Cream:

  • 1 tub of Cool Whip (24 oz)
  • 1 can of condensed milk (14 oz)
  • 1/2 cup of pineapple mojito jerky or fresh diced pineapple
  • 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips
  • 1 cup of honey graham cereal (crushed)
  • Strawberry topping

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the Cool Whip and condensed milk. Gently fold them together until well incorporated.
  2. Fold in the pineapple, white chocolate chips, creating delightful bursts of sweetness in each bite.
  3. Sprinkle in the crushed honey graham cereal, adding a delightful crunch and complementing the tropical flavors.
  4. Stir in strawberry topping.

Repurposing the Candle Jar:

After preparing the ice cream mixture, I realized that the candle jar itself could serve as a charming container for the final creation.

The cleaning process outlined helps remove any remaining wax, eliminate odors, and thoroughly clean the jar. This ensures that no harmful substances or unwanted residues are present. Once the jar has been cleaned and dried, it becomes a suitable and safe option for storing food.

However, it’s important to exercise caution and common sense when repurposing any container for food storage. Ensure that the jar is made of food-safe materials, such as glass, and that it is in good condition without any cracks or damages. Additionally, always make sure the jar is cleaned and dried properly before using it to store food.

  1. Remove any remaining wax: If there is leftover wax in the jar, place it in the freezer for a few hours until the wax hardens. Once hardened, use a butter knife or spoon to gently pry out the wax. Dispose of the wax responsibly.
  2. Remove the wick and metal base: The wick and metal base can usually be easily removed by gently pulling them out. Be careful not to scratch the inside of the jar.
  3. Clean the jar: Fill the candle jar with boiling water and a few drops of dish soap. Let it soak for a few minutes to loosen any remaining wax residue. Then, use a sponge or cloth to scrub the inside of the jar, removing any wax or residue. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  4. Eliminate any lingering odor: Sometimes, a faint scent from the previous candle may still be present. To remove it, create a mixture of equal parts baking soda and water. Apply the mixture to the inside of the jar, scrub gently, and rinse well. This should help eliminate any lingering odors.
  5. Air dry the jar: Place the cleaned candle jar upside down on a towel or drying rack to air dry completely. Make sure it’s completely dry before using it as a container for the Pineapple No-Churn Ice Cream.

Using the Candle Jar as a Container:

Once the candle jar is clean and dry, it’s ready to be used as a stylish and functional container for the Pineapple No-Churn Ice Cream. Simply scoop the prepared ice cream into the jar, filling it to your desired level.
