If you’ve been seeing blanket dumplings all over your feed, this is that version, and it is worth every bit of hype. These dumplings are filled with a flavorful chicken mixture, pan-fried until crispy, then steamed to get that perfect juicy center.
The best part, they cook together in one pan like a “blanket,” giving you that viral pull-apart moment that feels impressive but is actually so doable at home.
What Are Blanket Dumplings?
Blanket dumplings are dumplings placed closely together in a pan so they cook as one connected layer. The bottoms get crispy, the tops stay soft, and when you pull them apart, you get that satisfying, viral-style reveal.

Ingredients
Dumpling Filling
- 1 lb ground chicken or ground pork
- 1/2 cup shredded cabbage
- ½ cup shredded carrots
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 stalks green onion, chopped
- 1 minced garlic clove
- 1 tbsp ginger paste
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- 1/3 cup hot water
Dumplings
- 1 package dumpling wrappers
- 3 tbsp avocado oil
- ¼ cup water (for steaming)
For Serving
- Sliced green onions
- Chili crunch
- Soy sauce
- Sesame seeds
How to Make Blanket Dumplings
1. Make the Filling
In a large bowl, mix together ground chicken, cabbage, carrots, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, green onions, garlic paste, ginger paste, sesame oil, salt, and white pepper.
Slowly stir in the hot water until the mixture is well combined and slightly juicy.

2.Cook the ‘Filling’
Heat oil in a large nonstick pan over medium heat.
Place dumplings close together in the pan.
Let them cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the bottoms are golden and crispy.
3. Make the Blankents
Place one wonton wrapper on each mound so they are fully covered.
4. Steam to Finish
Pour in the water and immediately cover with a lid.
Let steam for about 5 to 7 minutes, until the dumplings are fully cooked and tender.
Remove the lid and let any remaining liquid cook off so the bottoms crisp back up.
5. Serve
Top with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Serve with chili crunch and soy sauce for dipping.
Tips for the Best Blanket Dumplings
- Do not overcrowd too tightly, but keep them touching
- Use a nonstick or well-oiled pan to prevent sticking
- The hot water in the filling keeps the dumplings juicy
- Let the bottoms re-crisp after steaming for the best texture

Make It Your Own
- Swap ground chicken for pork, turkey, or even beef.
- Add finely chopped mushrooms for extra texture
- Spice it up with sriracha or red pepper flakes
- Try a dipping sauce with soy sauce, rice vinegar, and chili oil
Real Life Mom Moment
This is one of those recipes that feels a little elevated but is still totally doable on a regular night. I love making these when I want something different than the usual rotation but still easy enough to pull together between everything else going on.
And the crispy bottom, that alone makes it worth it.
