The Divorce follows Naomi, whose seemingly perfect life falls apart when her husband abruptly leaves her, drains their accounts, and moves on with a much younger woman. As Naomi becomes increasingly focused on her ex-husband’s new girlfriend, she uncovers secrets that suggest there’s far more happening beneath the surface than she initially realized.

If you’re a Frieda McFadden fan, you know the formula by now. Not everything is what it seems, someone is always hiding something, and you’re almost guaranteed to encounter an unreliable narrator along the way.

That’s exactly what you’ll find in The Divorce.

After reading several of Frieda’s books, I’ve started noticing some of the patterns and clues she leaves behind. While I couldn’t fully predict every twist, I found myself picking up on things sooner than I have in some of her previous novels. I had a general sense of where the story was heading, even if I wasn’t completely sure how everything would connect in the end.

There is a significant amount of gaslighting throughout the story. The constant uncertainty about who was telling the truth created tension, but it also made me want to yell at the pages more than once.

That said, this is very much Frieda McFadden doing what she does best. The chapters are short, the pacing is fast, and the story is incredibly easy to binge. Even when I thought I had something figured out, I still wanted to keep reading to see how it would all unfold.

Will I continue reading Frieda McFadden’s books? Yes.

Will I continue getting frustrated by her characters? Also yes.

At this point, her books have become my favorite palate cleansers between heavier psychological thrillers. They’re quick, entertaining, and perfect when I want something suspenseful without committing to a more complex read. Even when I stay within the thriller genre, a Frieda McFadden book is usually a reliable way to get out of a reading slump.

While The Divorce wasn’t my favorite Frieda McFadden novel, it delivered exactly what I’ve come to expect from her: twists, secrets, unreliable narrators, and plenty of moments that had me second-guessing what was really happening. If you’re already a fan of her work, you’ll likely enjoy the ride, even if you find yourself frustrated right alongside the main character.
