If you are looking for a sweet holiday keepsake project, this fingerprint snowman ornament DIY is the perfect craft night idea. We spent the evening rolling clay, making tiny fingerprint snowmen, and turning them into ornaments that will hang on our tree year after year. It is simple, budget friendly, and little hands can do almost every step on their own.

Supplies You’ll Need

Grab everything in one simple click: my supplies link. My set included:

  • Air dry clay (white is perfect for snow)
  • A frame ornament (mine came with a tree background, but you can absolutely design your own)
  • A fine-tip marker or paint pen to draw the face
  • A glue gun or strong craft glue
  • Optional: glitter, tiny pom-poms, ribbon, or mini scarves to personalize

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Roll three little balls of clay, biggest on the bottom, smallest on the top. This forms your snowman’s body, yes we’re doing the classic three-ball stack.
  2. Use your finger to press each ball lightly so they stick together and flatten the bottom of the largest ball so it sits firmly on the base of the frame ornament.
  3. Once your snowman shape is set inside the frame, draw on the happy little snowman’s face: two eyes, a carrot nose, maybe a smile (or a cheeky grin).
  4. If your frame came with a tree background (mine did), position the snowman in front of it so it pops. If your frame is plain, no worries, you could add mini accessories like a pom-pom hat or ribbon scarf for extra charm.
  5. Apply glue to the back of the snowman clay form and press it firmly onto the frame base. Let it dry fully so everything stays in place.
  6. Hang your finished ornament on the tree, give it a proud moment, and maybe write the year on the back with a fine-tip marker to remember this craft night forever.

Why This Craft Works for Kids

  • It’s simple but hands-on: rolling clay is fun for little fingers, and the fingerprint detail adds a personal touch.
  • Low mess, high memory: Air dry clay means no oven, no special setup—just craft and dry.
  • Keepsake value: Every time you hang it, you’ll remember the laughter, the together-time, and the little voices saying “Look what I made!”
  • Customizable: You can go classic white snowman, or paint it rainbow, add glitter or mini accessories. It’s a craft that grows with your creativity.

Tips From My Craft Night

  • Let the kids pick the decorations: ribbon, glitter, tiny buttons—whatever makes them feel proud.
  • Have extra clay ready. Sometimes two snowmen appear before you even finish guiding the first.
  • Dry time matters: Give it at least a few hours or overnight so nothing shifts when you hang it.
  • Storage note: Because the ornament has clay glued on, treat it gently and store it flat in a box after the holiday to keep it looking fresh year after year.
  • Make it a tradition: Next year pick a different shape, maybe a fingerprint reindeer or fingerprint Santa and stack your ornaments for a family collection.

Final Thought

This little fingerprint snowman ornament is more than a craft. It’s a moment captured, a craft night you’ll remember, a story you’ll tell, and a tree memory you’ll smile at every December. So roll up sleeves, let the kids squish the clay, draw those sweet faces, and glue on something that says, “We made this together.”

Happy crafting, mom friends!
