So I made my own DIY Cricut iron on shirt, and honestly it turned out better than anything I could have bought.

The best part? It took about 20 minutes and cost just a few dollars in supplies.

How to Make a DIY Cricut Iron On Shirt

Step 1: Upload and Size Your Design

Upload the SVG to Cricut Design Space. Size your shells based on where you want to place them. I did two shells on the chest, each about 4 inches wide.

Step 2: Mirror and Cut

Before you cut, make sure you mirror your design. This is a must for iron on vinyl. Select your iron on vinyl material setting and cut.

Step 3: Weed the Design

Use your weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl around your shells. Take your time here, especially around any detailed edges.

Step 4: Press It On

Position your shells on your shirt. Use a heat press or iron and follow the temperature and time guidelines for your specific vinyl brand. I pressed at 315 degrees for about 15 seconds with firm pressure.

Step 5: Peel and Wear

Let it cool slightly, then peel back the carrier sheet. Give it one more press if needed, and you are done.

Tips for the Best Results

• Always do a test press on a scrap piece of fabric before committing to your shirt
• Pre-press your shirt for a few seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles before applying your design
• If an edge is not sticking after peeling, just press it again for a few more seconds
• Wash inside out and on a gentle cycle to make your design last longer

Variations to Try

• Try white vinyl on a colored tee for a different look
• Use a single large shell centered on the chest instead of two
• Add a word or phrase under the shells using a simple font in Design Space
• Make matching shirts for you and your kids

A regular iron works just fine. Just make sure you are applying firm, even pressure and hitting the right temperature for your vinyl.
